Quarantine & Clean

It's officially spring! so you know what that means, from social distancing and quarantining, now is the perfect time to get in some spring cleaning.

I know that when life gets in the way whether your a college student or even a mom, it may be hard to keep things organized, but with the climate that we are under why not spend time cleansing and getting organizing.

I am only speaking from experience when I say that keeping my house and closet clean helps me focus on life and other aspects of life much better. Detoxing and de-cluttering are a few very important factors for mental clarity, especially now that we are sitting at home, with all this extra time on our hands.

If you have ever felt like you have nothing to wear or like you can't ever find a clothes from your wardrobe when you need it the most, it is probably because your closet is not organized.

Before you start you have to think about what the purpose of your closet purge means to... are you doing this to get rid of old clothes, are you detoxing or are you just organizing your closet because it’s long overdue. Whatever the reason. This is the very step when closet organizing/cleaning.

Take your time with this, make it fun, once it begins to feel like a chore than you need to take a break, it shouldn’t feel like this.

Closet detox prep

You want to set the mood, the vibe for your closet rebirth sesh. Get on FT or invite a friend over - you don’t want to do this by yourself . Have someone there that really knows you can help you make decisions, help you come to your senses with items that you need to let go of.

The Closet rebirth

Now that you have created your space and gone through the wardrobe checklist, now its time to get down to business. Here are a few things to do as your organize your wardrobe and clean your closet:

  • Empty and clean your closet | Start by taking everything out of your closet and putting your clothes and shoes into different sections. Clean your closet out from wiping down walls and shelves to vacuuming or sweeping as necessary.

  • Create a checklist | Create a checklist or you can use my wardrobe checklist that you can download for free {Free Wardrobe Checklist} and use it as a guide. You can go through the items you already have using the checklist to see what you have, what you don’t have, what you may need, and even what you may need to get something new of.

  • Take inventory | After you have made your checklist, go through all of your clothes, shoes, and accessories, and mark off what you have already. this will help you figure out what you may still need to build your wardrobe.

  • Declutter your clothes by category | Once you've gone through your checklist and taken inventory, now you can go through each section and get rid of what is no longer needed or old/worn out. This will also help you figure out what is needed and what to get more of based on the already created checklist.

  • Use a Closet cleaning App | If you are someone like me, I love using apps and checklist to make my life easier. I have created a list of a few apps that I use and/ or at least would recommend to keep your closets clean and organized. A few of these apps are also great for wardrobe/outfit planning. Bet sure to check out my free Closet App List. Hopefully you will find use of at one of the Apps to get your closet organized.

  • Merchandise | Organize each by its appropriate section. (I.e. Tops, bottoms, accessories.) Create a layout of where you want each section and item to go. For example, accessories on the wall, shoes on one shelf, and bags on another, etc.

  • Store your clothes by category | As I mentioned above, you will organize each of your clothing and accessory items into it's appropriate section or category. More specifically, within each of those categories, store/organize each item based on details. Such as short sleeve shirts will be put with other short sleeve shirts.

  • Color-code your wardrobe| Color coordinating your clothing pieces will upgrade the presentation of your wardrobe.

  • Store your most used clothes at eye level| Have you ever noticed that you wear clothes or shoes the most when you see it? Keeping your go to clothing items, shoes, and outfits at eye level will help when your picking out outfits or on the go. Rotate your clothes/shoes and keep newer options on a clothing rack outside of your closet.

  • UPGRADE your hangers / Use coordinating hangers| Girl! Let them goooo! It's time to let go of the plastic (not good for the environment), wire (not good for your clothes), and the idea that its okay to have mix-match hangers in the form of different colors and sizes. This is No Bueno! My recommendation wooden hangers, but you can also go for the non-slip velvet hangers.

  • Hang anything delicate, fancy, or sturdy| Hang dresses, and other fancy items that could be potentially destroyed or wrinkle when folding.

  • Roll t-shirts, pajamas, and workout clothes into storage boxes| Rolling your garments will help with saving space and keeping things organized. Once worn you can roll and move to the back.

  • Use drawer dividers for your undergarments | This will keep your garments organized and for a better presentation you can color coordinate this as well. Speaking of coordination, it's also good to start investing in matching undergarments and socks.

Maintenance

Keep what fits and the items you are sure about. The items that you can't fit: Recycle. Also, if you are unsure about certain items put them in a box, kind of like a maybe box for a week or two. Hide the Box >> Out of site, out of mind. Then go through the box and pick out the items / keep the items that you thought about and give away/recycle the ones that you didn't. You can also download my {Free Closet Cleaning Guide} to help you along your journey.

With the uncertainty of what's going on in our world today, focus on what you can control and be certain about..Good Luck with your closet rebirth! It's never to late to get your life....ORGANIZED!

XOXO,

Brittianaado
