Its the most wonderful time of the year!! - I bet you thought about Christmas when you read that. I love that time of the year, but I was actually talking about another great time of the year. The best time of the year that actually happens twice a year. Yes you guessed it: New York Fashion Week!
It is the time of the year when all designers, models, and fashion fiends can come together to celebrate fashion. When I first began to work fashion week shows, I had trouble when it came to what to bring, what to wear, and even what to do. I have created this simple (I mean like REAL SIMPLE) guide on how to have a successful fashion week.
PLANNING/NETWORKING
Whether you are planning to attend a show or work a show you have to plan in advance. I usually start planning at least one month in advance, but that is because I live in the state of New York. However, if you don't live in the state - I definitely recommend planning at least 2-3 months in advance. You want to give yourself enough time to network, find the shows you want to attend, and get your traveling plans in order.
I am sure you have heard this before, but its not what you know its who you know -In this case, its beneficial to be knowledgeable about this industry as well as being connected. I found that attending fashion related events and joining certain Facebook groups have helped me when I began on my journey of going to Fashion week shows or even working shows. I love reaching out to like minded individuals on these Facebook groups to connect and possible exchange resources.
What to Bring
Once you have arrangements and all your travel plans all figured out. You want to think about what you need to bring with you. As a stylist there are a few main items that you would definitely want to keep on hand whether you are working backstage or styling a client for NYFW. The easiest way to do that is by having a style bag, kit, or apron. Any one of these will be a great asset to you and make your styling process soooo much easier.
Here a few things that include in my style kit:
Measuring tape
Headscarf/Face scarf
Lint Roller
#2 safety pins (& other assorted pin sizes)
Scissors
Shoehorn
Head light/ bite light
Top Stick
Seam Ripper
Other:
Assorted needles & thread (black)
Pins and pin cushion
Double sided tape
Boob tape/ stars
The items listed above are my must haves and go-tos. It helps me stay organized and keep all of my supplies together. Another benefit of having a style bag/kit is simply that you know where everything is and if you get called last minute to do a show or style a client you can easily grab and go. Every stylist is different and will add their own personal touch to their kits.
Lastly, New York Fashion Week is not something you just show up to you have to plan accordingly. I truly love attending fashion shows, seeing the designers work come to life and styling my clients. I hope this quick reference/ guide helps you get ready for this upcoming New York Fashion Week or even any fashion week. I also want to hear from you all as well- if you have any tips or tricks that works for you when you are attending/working NYFW, feel free to comment below. :)
